Farmer’s Autumn: Traditional Clothes and Togetherness
When the summer in the Gasteiner Valley draws to end, high season starts for the bon vivant. As it is now time to enjoy the biggest celebration of the region: The Farmer’s Autumn. This year for the first time all three villages have officially joined together as a “Farmer’s Autumn Community”. The end of the summer’s harvest will be celebrated from the end of August until the end of October in Bad Gastein, Bad Hofgastein and Dorfgastein with many events and festivals. The start of the colourful Farmers Autumn will begin at the opening festival on the 26th August 2006 in the village centre of Bad Hofgastein. After the special church service you can enjoy watching the groups and organisations in their traditional clothes that are only worn on
very special occasions. In the evening the festivities will continue with dancing, singing and music.
The motto of this years Farmer’s Autumn is “Traditional Clothes and Costumes “ this theme was chosen to express the region’s traditions and culture. Of which clothes play a very important part. Clothes and its original traditional style, say a lot about the financial and social status of a region, and contributes an unmistakable part to regional traditions.
The varied scenic culture, and the living tradition of the farmer’s, make the Farmer’s Autumn to an equally enjoyable festival for both locals and guests alike. And that means here to still celebrate in the old traditional way: Whether by “Einheiga” at the individual farms, or at the colourful „Almabtriebs“ when the cattle are driven down from the high pastures – a spectacular event enjoyed by all. Farmer’s markets where tasty delicacies offered straight from the farm and Austrian Folk’s music fascinate visitors year after year.
Farmer’s Autumn – festival weeks in Dorfgastein from 27.08 until 02.09.2006
The beginning of the Dorfgasteiner Farmer’s Autumn is the theme of body and soul:
The cheese festivals will certainly satisfy you. Here the award winning Salzburger direct marketing companies present their best cheeses. And for your soul it’s up to the Kögerlalm where everything is happening at the Farmer’s Autumn Show. As well as this there is a “sundown walk” on the 29.08.06, a cosy “Blattl Krapfen” dinner (Austrian delicacies you’re bound to enjoy) on the Steiner Hochalm, as well as an “Austrian Folks Evening“ with singing and dancing in the Dorfgasteiner Festsaal (festival hall) on the 30.08.06. The highlight of the Dorfgasteiner Farmer’s Autumn is the large Farmer’s Festival taking place on the 2nd September 2006, from 11.00 am in the Unterberg part of the village. The main theme of the festival is “Traditional Organisation’s Clothes” where examples of different organisations traditional clothes will be presented, as well as the history and development, which be explained by personally by each organisation’s president. Awaiting visitors apart from the delicacies from out of the farmer’s kitchen and cellar’s, there is an exhibition of “Old Timer Tractor’s”, a small farmer’s enjoyment park, as well as a lovely atmosphere created by the sounds of traditional music played by the “Die Strochner Buam“ late into the evening. And the little ones are well taken care of in the special entertainment programme of the Dorfgasteiner Pongi-Clubs.
Farmer’s Autumn Festival Weeks from 03.09.2006
The Farmer’s Festival Weeks in Bad Hofgastein will start with a big festival at the Hamplplatz on the 03.09.06. When the Goaßlschnalzer will lash with their whips in time to music, making the taste of the of the hearty farmer’s snacks being offered straight from the farm even better. Healthy and tasty is everything on offer at the farmer’s markets (07.09.06, 9.00 a.m. -12.00
midday, Senator-Wilfing-Platz) or on the Herb Walk with Liesl Gruber (04.09.06, from 9.00 a.m. meeting place „Kurverwaltung“ Cure Administration). A highlight of the Bad Gasteiner festival weeks (09.09.06, from 9.00 a.m.) is the traditional “Schafabtrieb” (driving of the sheep down from the high pastures). After the sheep’s chorus, there will be a meal of lamb awaiting the helpful spectator’s, which has been especially prepared for this occasion. The Tanzlmusi will make sure of a lively atmosphere. The most beautiful Sunday clothes can be seen and admired on “Dirndl – Costume” Sunday at the church service.
Farmer’s Autumn in Bad Gastein from 08.09. to 17.09.2006
The Bad Gasteiner’s have also thought of some special events for “their” Farmer’s Autumn Festival weeks. Many groups of musician’s will make sure of good entertainment by playing at the “Almausklang“ (marking the end of the summer on the high pastures) on the Zittauer Alm on the 08.09.2006, meeting place: 9.45 at the valley station of the Stubnerkogel, or at the opening concert of the Bürgermusik im Bad Gastein on the 09.09.06 at 8.00 p.m. at the Kongressplatz. A hearty Alm- Farmer’s Buffet will attract you up to the upper Asten Alm on the 10.09.06 at 10.00 a.m.)
After the walk up hill you can soak up the autumn sunshine in front of the hut. Culinary delicacies can be experienced at the lower Asten Alm on the 12.09.06, at 12.00 midday, while making cheese on the Veitbauernalm on the 15.09.06, 10.15 a.m. or at the “Hoffest Festival” at the Hausebauer on the 17.09.06 from 11.00 a.m. At the Farmer’s Autumn Folklore Evening on the 15.09.2006 everything has to do with the Farmer’s Autumn motto traditional costumes and clothes. Austrian “Trachten” Clothes Organisations, Schuplattler, Schnalzer and Choirs will show their best sides. This and a lot more can be seen and experienced at the Gasteiner Farmer’s Autumn.
